Geographical and Resource Endowment:

  • Land Area    -     20,750 hectares (207.5 sq. km.)
                        
    Its land is gifted by the Creator with 19 major rivers; 9 of which empties into its western side serving half of its population, while the others pours toward the Ga-as Inlet at its eastern side.  It is one of the biggest municipality of Dinagat Islands having a total of 207.5 square kilometers and consequently having the biggest area potential to agricultural production.  It has a vast quantity of minerals both metallic and non-metallic, most of which are iron, chromite, nickel, gold, marble, white clay and others.

                         It is strategically located at the central part of Dinagat Islands with the municipality of Tubajon at its north, Basilisa at its south and Cagdianao at its southeasterly portion.  its northwest lies the historic Surigao Strait, where one of the greatest naval battle was once fought by the Allied Forces against hte Japanese Occupation Forces; while on its east leads to the abysmal canyon of the earth, known a the Philippine Deep.
  •  Terrain:
                        Dominantly mountainous and rugged terrain with limited plains mostly at its western coastal areas, while mostly plain and low lands at its hinterlands.  It is gently to steeply sloping.  Only an approximated 9% are in level to nearly level land predominant found along coast and river channels.
        • Season: (Type II Climate)

                            Like the rest of all the municipalities of the province of Dinagat Islands, Libjo is within typhoon belt.  Typhoons usually occur during the later part of the year, so that storms, trade winds and monsoon winds are common during these periods.  However for the past years it has been excluded from the furry of typhoons.  There is no pronounced dry season only a pronounced rainy season occuring mostly in the periods covering the months from November to January.
                                It has an average temperature of 80.4 degrees F.  The highest occurs during the months of May that is 82 degrees F. and the lowest during the month of December, which is 78.6 degrees

ImageLibjo comes from the vernacular "liboo" a kind of mussel or clam found in abundance from its swamps.  In the early days these species are gathered in volume because it was easier for anybody to collect it from the swamp with no tools to be used except ones feet and hands.

There is not much information as to the beginning of the settlements of Libjo except that on one occasion it was mentioned in the records in the National Archieves that the Spanish Provincial Governor of Surigao otherwise known as Caraga, Don Felipe de Arceo, dated 25 April 1855 "in which he indicates the urgent necessity of erecting a parish for the town of Dinagat and the barrios of Libjo, Tubajon and Cagdianao and the town of Nonoc."

On February 29, 1960, Libjo became a municipality by virtue of Executive Order No. 381 signed by President Carlos P. Garcia.  This was named ALBOR in honor of Moises J. Alfaro the Mayor of Loreto and Prospero Borja, the Mayor of Dinagat.  It was the final phase of the continuous effort of a few leaders who managed to utilize the power of politics.  This was the product of the public clamor of the people to be separated from the mother of municipalities of Dinagat and Loreto who on December 2, 1959 held a Joint Session at the barrio of Libjo.  This Joint Council in session unanimously approved Resolution No. 5, which proposes for the creation of the Municipality of Albor, with the mother municipalities to share portions of their territories to comprise the new proposed municipality.

In the later year this municipality was renamed Libjo by virtue of R.A 4981 for the reason that the name Albor did not appear in the official map of the country which causes confusions of the sea travelers in locating the

ImageWatermelon, the municipality popularly on its sweet melon production since 1995.  Most of the uplan farmers adopted the technology especifically in the area of sitio Cabalawan, Garcia and radiated to nieghboring barangays that produce a tonnage of production. Cebu, Butuan and Surigao City serving as the main market of our products hince traders are satisfied with its quality. Harvest season of melon begins on the month of March until 3rd planting last to october as the off season of the product.
